European Commission Call for Proposals for strengthening the role of civil society in human rights and democratic reform and implementation of EU guidelines on Death Penalty

The European Commission through the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) has issued a call for proposals with the objectives of strengthening the role of civil society in human rights and democratic reform, and supporting the actions on human rights and democracy issues in areas covered by EU Guidelines, including on the death penalty.

There are two lots to be covered under this call for proposals and their objective are us under:

For lot 1 – the strengthening of transnational (regional and global) actions on conflict management, mediation and dialogue and/or strengthening regional/global civil society and its interaction with regional/global human rights mechanisms.

The aim is to support civil society networks developing greater cohesion in working on human rights, political pluralism and democratic political participation and representation, while contributing to the peaceful conciliation of group interests and combating discrimination on any ground; by developing equal participation of men and women in social, economic and political life, thus becoming an effective force for positive change, through cooperation among local civil society organisations and stakeholders.

For lot 2 – support for the implementation of the EU Guidelines on the Death Penalty, which provide the general framework for EIDHR assistance in this area as well as the EU policy towards third countries.

EIDHR support will be given to activities focusing on promoting the restrictive use of, the establishment of a moratorium on, and the abolition of the death penalty.

Proposals invited for the Next Funding Cycle by the National Endowment for Democracy Source – 20.01.2012

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world. Each year, NED makes more than 1,000 grants to support the projects of non-governmental groups abroad who are working for democratic goals in more than 90 countries.  Since its founding in 1983, the Endowment has remained on the leading edge of democratic struggles everywhere, while evolving into a multifaceted institution that is a hub of activity, resources and intellectual exchange for activists, practitioners and scholars of democracy the world over.

NED’s direct grants are aimed at providing financial support to hundreds of nongovernmental groups abroad working to ensure human rights, an independent media, the rule of law and to advance other democratic goals.

NED encourages applications for financial support from activist organizations in diverse situations, such as transitional countries where the goal is democratic consolidation, authoritarian countries where the goals are liberalization, and the protection of human rights.

In this context, NED is currently seeking grant proposals from eligible organizations to be considered during the next board meeting scheduled to be held on March 30, 2012.

Programs Eligible for Grants

NED is especially interested in proposals that originate with local democratic groups. It is also interested in nonpartisan programs seeking to strengthen democratic values. Note that the Endowment does not make grants to individuals.

Selection Procedure

NED Board of Directors meets every quarter for reviewing and evaluating the grant proposals. In addition to evaluating how a program fits within the Endowment’s overall priorities, the Board considers factors such as the urgency of a program, its relevance to specific needs and conditions in a particular country, and the democratic commitment and experience of the applicant.

Last date for submission of grant proposals for the next cycle is January 20, 2012

LiLi Creates Versatile, Go-Anywhere Bootable Linux Thumb Drives

LiLi Creates Versatile, Go-Anywhere Bootable Linux Thumb Drives

Windows: Whether you’re looking to try out Linux or create a Windows troubleshooting tool, LiLi will create a powerful Linux thumb drive, letting you pick your distribution, save data between reboots, or even launch your mobile OS right from Windows.

While there are other tools out there that create live Linux USBs, LiLi is a bit more versatile. Not only can you create a live USB stick of any distro you want, but you can also store data and save your settings between reboots, making it a real mobile OS on which you can install programs, make changes, and even update software on. It also hides all your data, so snoopers looking at your USB drive won’t see anything you’ve saved onto it.

In addition, while you can boot directly from the drive as normal, each drive even comes with a portable version of VirtualBox on it, so you can also boot your mobile distro right from Windows. You don’t even need to know how to use VirtualBox; it creates an .exe file on the drive that will take you directly into a virtualized session of your mobile distro (Though you can’t save data from VirtualBox sessions, only from true live sessions). It’s a pretty cool utility, and works perfectly as a browse-without-a-trace OS, though it’s really useful for just about any of your Linux needs. Hit the link below to check it out.

Linux Directory Structure (File System Structure) Explained with Examples

Have you wondered why certain programs are located under /bin, or /sbin, or /usr/bin, or /usr/sbin?

For example, less command is located under /usr/bin directory. Why not /bin, or /sbin, or /usr/sbin? What is the different between all these directories?

In this article, let us review the Linux filesystem structures and understand the meaning of individual high-level directories.

1. / – Root

  • Every single file and directory starts from the root directory.
  • Only root user has write privilege under this directory.
  • Please note that /root is root user’s home directory, which is not same as /.

2. /bin – User Binaries

  • Contains binary executables.
  • Common linux commands you need to use in single-user modes are located under this directory.
  • Commands used by all the users of the system are located here.
  • For example: ps, ls, ping, grep, cp.

3. /sbin – System Binaries

  • Just like /bin, /sbin also contains binary executables.
  • But, the linux commands located under this directory are used typically by system aministrator, for system maintenance purpose.
  • For example: iptables, reboot, fdisk, ifconfig, swapon

4. /etc – Configuration Files

  • Contains configuration files required by all programs.
  • This also contains startup and shutdown shell scripts used to start/stop individual programs.
  • For example: /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/logrotate.conf

5. /dev – Device Files

  • Contains device files.
  • These include terminal devices, usb, or any device attached to the system.
  • For example: /dev/tty1, /dev/usbmon0

6. /proc – Process Information

  • Contains information about system process.
  • This is a pseudo filesystem contains information about running process. For example: /proc/{pid} directory contains information about the process with that particular pid.
  • This is a virtual filesystem with text information about system resources. For example: /proc/uptime

7. /var – Variable Files

  • var stands for variable files.
  • Content of the files that are expected to grow can be found under this directory.
  • This includes — system log files (/var/log); packages and database files (/var/lib); emails (/var/mail); print queues (/var/spool); lock files (/var/lock); temp files needed across reboots (/var/tmp);

8. /tmp – Temporary Files

  • Directory that contains temporary files created by system and users.
  • Files under this directory are deleted when system is rebooted.

9. /usr – User Programs

  • Contains binaries, libraries, documentation, and source-code for second level programs.
  • /usr/bin contains binary files for user programs. If you can’t find a user binary under /bin, look under /usr/bin. For example: at, awk, cc, less, scp
  • /usr/sbin contains binary files for system administrators. If you can’t find a system binary under /sbin, look under /usr/sbin. For example: atd, cron, sshd, useradd, userdel
  • /usr/lib contains libraries for /usr/bin and /usr/sbin
  • /usr/local contains users programs that you install from source. For example, when you install apache from source, it goes under /usr/local/apache2

10. /home – Home Directories

  • Home directories for all users to store their personal files.
  • For example: /home/john, /home/nikita

11. /boot – Boot Loader Files

  • Contains boot loader related files.
  • Kernel initrd, vmlinux, grub files are located under /boot
  • For example: initrd.img-2.6.32-24-generic, vmlinuz-2.6.32-24-generic

12. /lib – System Libraries

  • Contains library files that supports the binaries located under /bin and /sbin
  • Library filenames are either ld* or lib*.so.*
  • For example: ld-2.11.1.so, libncurses.so.5.7

13. /opt – Optional add-on Applications

  • opt stands for optional.
  • Contains add-on applications from individual vendors.
  • add-on applications should be installed under either /opt/ or /opt/ sub-directory.

14. /mnt – Mount Directory

  • Temporary mount directory where sysadmins can mount filesystems.

15. /media – Removable Media Devices

  • Temporary mount directory for removable devices.
  • For examples, /media/cdrom for CD-ROM; /media/floppy for floppy drives; /media/cdrecorder for CD writer

16. /srv – Service Data

  • srv stands for service.
  • Contains server specific services related data.
  • For example, /srv/cvs contains CVS related data.

Four hack suspects linked to terrorist group

The FBI and Philippine law enforcement officials arrested four people in the Philippines this week who were allegedly paid by terrorists to hack into AT&T’s system, but the company said its system was not breached.

The four, who were arrested Wednesday in Manila, were paid by the same Saudi Arabian-based terrorist group identified by the FBI as funding the 2008 attack on Mumbai, the Philippines’ Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said in a statement. The coordinated attacks in India’s largest city claimed 164 lives and wounded at least 308.

“The hacking activity resulted in almost $2 million in losses incurred by the company,” the CIDG said in a statement.

The suspects hacked the trunk-like PBX (private branch exchange) phone lines of different telecommunications companies, including AT&T, the CIDG said. Money stolen in the hacks was diverted to bank accounts belonging to the terrorists, who paid the Filipino hackers on commission, the group said.

The four allegedly worked for a group originally run by Muhammad Zamir, a Pakistani arrested by the FBI in 2007 who was associated with Jemaah Islamiah, a Southeast Asian militant group with links to Al Qaeda.

“Zamir’s group, later tagged by the FBI to be the financial source of the terrorist attack in Mumbai, India, on November 26, 2008, is also the same group that paid Kwan’s group of hackers in Manila,” Police Senior Superintendent Gilbert Sosa said in the statement.

An AT&T representative told Reuters that it “ended up writing off some fraudulent charges that appeared on customer bills” but did not comment on the $2 million figure.

“AT&T and its network were neither targeted nor breached by the hackers,” AT&T spokeswoman Jan Rasmussen said. “AT&T only assisted law enforcement in the investigation that led to the arrest of a group of hackers.”

The FBI requested the CIDG’s assistance in March after discovering the hacking group had targeted AT&T in the U.S., the CIDG said.

Earlier in the week, AT&T said it thwarted an attempt to steal mobile customer data and that no accounts were breached.
