Between Microsoft’s October launch of Windows 8 and Tuesday’s rollout of Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 365, there’s no denying that it’s been a decision-filled few months for PC users.

It seems safe to say that Windows 8 has not been received as enthusiastically as Microsoft might have liked, but Office is of course a whole different ballgame, as they say.

With numerous components and pricing plans, this cross-platform entry is surely Redmond’s broadest-reaching office product to date.

Time will tell how well it does, but meanwhile there are plenty of alternatives for those who remain unconvinced. Here’s a small sampling of what’s available from the world of free and open source software.

1. LibreOffice

Certainly the leading office productivity suite on the open source side is LibreOffice. In the two or so years since it was forked from OpenOffice, it’s become the suite most commonly included by the top Linux distributions. With six feature-rich applications for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and more, the software had already been downloaded some 20 million times by last fall. It’s available as a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

2. Apache OpenOffice

Then, too, there’s Apache OpenOffice, now under the purview of the Apache Software Foundation. OpenOffice is what LibreOffice is based on, so the two share many similarities; development work seems to be progressing more quickly on the latter, however. Not to be confused with the German variation now known as White Label Office, this suite is available as a free download at the project site.

3. Calligra Suite

Stepping a bit closer to Microsoft’s new suite in terms of cross-platform compatibility is Calligra Suite, a graphics and office suite created by the KDE project from KOffice in 2010. With versions for desktop PCs, tablets, and smartphones, this package includes eight components spanning word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, vector graphics, and more. It can be downloaded for free for Linux, FreeBSD, OS X, and Windows.

4. OxygenOffice Professional

OxygenOffice Professional, meanwhile, is an enhanced version of OpenOffice that comes with extra goodies including templates, clip art, samples, fonts, and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) support. Now in version 3.2.1, this free software can be downloaded for 32-bit Windows as well as 32- and 64-bit Linux.

5. Feng Office Community Edition

Finally, there’s Feng Office Community Edition, a free and open source online project management and collaboration tool formerly known as OpenGoo that offers task management, document management, project management, time tracking, knowledge management, and more. UN Women’s Call for Proposals for the UN Trust Fund – 19.01.2012.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, UN Women has announced the availability of grant support to NGOs under the the United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women.

This call for proposals also marks the UN Trust Fund’s 15th Anniversary. It was established by UN General Assembly resolution 50/166 in 1996 to support national and local efforts to end violence against women. The UN Trust Fund awards grants annually through an open and competitive process. The majority of its grantees are NGOs, with grants awarded also to governments and UN country teams.

Current call for proposals is open to NGOs, women’s and community-based organizations and coalitions and operational research institutions and UN Country Teams in partnership with governments and civil society organizations to apply and seek funding support.

The areas of action under this call are:

• Closing the Gap on the Implementation of National and Local Laws, Policies and Action Plans that Address Violence against Women
• Addressing Violence against Women in Conflict, Post‐conflict and Transitional Settings

The UN Trust Fund can allocate funding from US $300,000 to $1 million for large civil society organizations, governments and UN Country teams. For small organizations, including grassroots women’s organizations and networks, project funding for a minimum of $100,000 will be considered. Project durations can be from 2-3 years.

Proposals invited for the Next Funding Cycle by the National Endowment for Democracy Source – 20.01.2012

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world. Each year, NED makes more than 1,000 grants to support the projects of non-governmental groups abroad who are working for democratic goals in more than 90 countries.  Since its founding in 1983, the Endowment has remained on the leading edge of democratic struggles everywhere, while evolving into a multifaceted institution that is a hub of activity, resources and intellectual exchange for activists, practitioners and scholars of democracy the world over.

NED’s direct grants are aimed at providing financial support to hundreds of nongovernmental groups abroad working to ensure human rights, an independent media, the rule of law and to advance other democratic goals.

NED encourages applications for financial support from activist organizations in diverse situations, such as transitional countries where the goal is democratic consolidation, authoritarian countries where the goals are liberalization, and the protection of human rights.

In this context, NED is currently seeking grant proposals from eligible organizations to be considered during the next board meeting scheduled to be held on March 30, 2012.

Programs Eligible for Grants

NED is especially interested in proposals that originate with local democratic groups. It is also interested in nonpartisan programs seeking to strengthen democratic values. Note that the Endowment does not make grants to individuals.

Selection Procedure

NED Board of Directors meets every quarter for reviewing and evaluating the grant proposals. In addition to evaluating how a program fits within the Endowment’s overall priorities, the Board considers factors such as the urgency of a program, its relevance to specific needs and conditions in a particular country, and the democratic commitment and experience of the applicant.

Four hack suspects linked to terrorist group

The FBI and Philippine law enforcement officials arrested four people in the Philippines this week who were allegedly paid by terrorists to hack into AT&T’s system, but the company said its system was not breached.

The four, who were arrested Wednesday in Manila, were paid by the same Saudi Arabian-based terrorist group identified by the FBI as funding the 2008 attack on Mumbai, the Philippines’ Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said in a statement. The coordinated attacks in India’s largest city claimed 164 lives and wounded at least 308.

“The hacking activity resulted in almost $2 million in losses incurred by the company,” the CIDG said in a statement.

The suspects hacked the trunk-like PBX (private branch exchange) phone lines of different telecommunications companies, including AT&T, the CIDG said. Money stolen in the hacks was diverted to bank accounts belonging to the terrorists, who paid the Filipino hackers on commission, the group said.

The four allegedly worked for a group originally run by Muhammad Zamir, a Pakistani arrested by the FBI in 2007 who was associated with Jemaah Islamiah, a Southeast Asian militant group with links to Al Qaeda.

“Zamir’s group, later tagged by the FBI to be the financial source of the terrorist attack in Mumbai, India, on November 26, 2008, is also the same group that paid Kwan’s group of hackers in Manila,” Police Senior Superintendent Gilbert Sosa said in the statement.

An AT&T representative told Reuters that it “ended up writing off some fraudulent charges that appeared on customer bills” but did not comment on the $2 million figure.

“AT&T and its network were neither targeted nor breached by the hackers,” AT&T spokeswoman Jan Rasmussen said. “AT&T only assisted law enforcement in the investigation that led to the arrest of a group of hackers.”

The FBI requested the CIDG’s assistance in March after discovering the hacking group had targeted AT&T in the U.S., the CIDG said.

Earlier in the week, AT&T said it thwarted an attempt to steal mobile customer data and that no accounts were breached.
